How the Internet has impacted my life

Its 1996 and my mom just bought a computer with AOL. My aunt and uncle are at our house and we are all sitting around the computer waiting to sign- on for the first time. Once the dialing ends we see AOL’s homepage and links to a chat room, we enter, and the rest is history. At the time I thought it was fun, but little did I know I would be spending 80 percent of my day on it.

Today one billion out of six billion people in the world use the Internet and the largest percentage of users come out of Asia with Europe second and North America third. All these people are  connected more than every before and I think that can be a good thing and a bad thing.

For me, the Internet has also been good and bad. Good, because I have a wealth of knowledge accessible to me at every moment of every day. Bad, because I sometimes feel lost in it, as if there is some much information to devour, time flies and before I know it hours have gone by.

Since I began to use the Internet, I have found it encompasses all aspects of my life. Thanks to networking job sites, I was able to get my first full-time job, and thanks to Craig’s list an apartment. Using google I was able to research my future college and apply online. And finally thanks to MySpace I met a guy and dated him for over a year. Either personal or professional the Internet has definitely impacted my life.

Today, the Internet is more than a tool for my needs, it has become a way of life (however lame that sounds). But sometimes I wonder what would happen if one day the Internet stopped, would we cease to function?  Because honestly I can’t remember what it was like before 1996.
