Worst group experience
While attending Eastern Illinois University, I was working towards a B.A. in journalism and a minor in Sociology. My last semester I completed all required classes for my minor except one, empirical research, and this class required working with a partner for the final project.
My partner was a red headed girl who always sat in the front row. She knew everything and received A’s on all her quizzes. I on the other hand, found this final class to be the hardest class I had ever taken and I was happy to have her as my partner.
Our assignment was to write a detailed final paper on social patterns and we divided the work equally and produced a 15-page paper. Towards the end I felt like we weren’t quite ready so I asked my partner to meet with me and our professor. She did not agree and instead kept pushing it off, she said the paper was fine and there was nothing to worry about. The last week of class we finally went to the professor, and she told us we had many errors, but if we revised those errors we should be fine. So, of course we did and turned it in.
When the class ended, I received a D on the paper and she got a C. This caused my overall class average to drop causing me to not pass the class, and not allowing me to receive my minor in Sociology! I went to my advisor and he said I could take one more class and then graduate, which meant sticking around campus for one class, I did not stay.
Today, it’s not a big deal, I realized it was my lack of assertiveness and my trust that my partner knew what she was talking about. I still tell people I have a minor in sociology and although the actual words are not on my diploma, no one seems to care. But, it was definitely a lesson on class partners.
